NIYA Strumenti Musicali
One day I was snooping around the Instagram board and I stumbled upon a picture of a wonderful kalimba: the photo was taken at the sea, it was bright, inviting and the kalimba was too beautiful to see, hand painted, small and handy.
So, I decided to take a look at the profile of the people who shared it and not only do I discover that they are Italians, but they live near my house. Their contact was in plain sight: "customize your instrument", the slogan said, and also invited me to visit the laboratory. And why not?
Who can say that they have had the opportunity to admire the work of a kalimba builder live? I fortunately yes. And believe me, it’s a unique experience.
See the care with which the wood is treated and with what attention Maurizio and Ileana are dedicated to the choice of materials is incredible: their passion for materials and music is visible, you can almost touch so much is evident. They know very well the raw material, but also the procedures and what they want to get from a musical instrument.
For them, building kalimbas is not only a profession, but it is above all a gift, a way to make people happy: customer satisfaction is at the first place of their priorities and they want every musical instrument to be different from the other, unique.
Their initial idea was to open a workshop, a violin making shop, but then they decided to build the instruments with their own hands and sell them to fans. They personally choose the woods and materials, buying everything from companies in the territory that import African woods.
They pay attention to every step of the entire construction process, so that kalimbas have an excellent sound, resistance and are also beautiful to see. If Maurizio is a magician of wood, Ileana is very good at tuning and decorating these wooden masterpieces. Together, they are a perfect team.
